About Me

I am Brennan Hatton, a global ambitious adventurer looking for the best way to better the world.

From Wollongong, Australia, to Silicon Valley, California. I teach kids to make games, build software tools and make videos of my life to inspire others to join me.
.

What I’ve Done

I started the Meta Developer program, and helped the company grow as a startup to over $23 million. I’ve organized hackathons, launched my own products, and started my own companies in Games, Web and Education. I have worked alongside some of tech’s great professors, and climbed Mountains.

What I do

I am currently volunteering my time where I think it is needed most. Exploring Hackerspaces, Makerspaces, building games, AR / VR apps and other cool stuff. I attend hackathons, teach Game Dev, VR & minecraft at the PowerHouse Museum Sydney and recorded my life on Youtube.
“Brennan is a person of immense authenticity, integrity, and humility, and a great asset to Meta and to us, for the time that he was able to spend here.”
~ Prof. Steve Mann, Inventor of Wearable Computing, HDR Photography & Chief Scientist at Meta

Entrepreneurship

Meta creates Augmented Reality glasses allowing an interactive overlay of digital content onto the real world. I was employee #7 at Meta. Duing my time at Meta I saw the company grow from under $100,000 to over $23 Million. Below I will outline some of the many roles I had over my 2 years at Meta, and the programs I developed.

Started the Developer Program – the “Meta Pioneers Program”.

Engaging our first developers. 2013
– Providing access to the bare minimum hardware to start using our early SDK (Software Developer Kit).
– Running workshops with early prototypes, funded by the product demand. Building our first community of evangelists.
Saw the launch of our SDK. 2014
– Channeling feedback from the workshops, we were able to get the SDK ready for the public.
Shipping of our first product. 2014
– Workshops with BYO Meta 1’s, getting up to 30 people per workshop.
– Product sales at events and workshops.
– Hosted monthly webinars.
– We hit the road, travelling all around the world. Reaching the Asian, European, Australasian & Western markets.
Launch of our first 3rd party app. 2015
– Started using an app submission pipeline.

Meta Pioneer Workshops

“Hundreds of developers from across the USA and across the world, from 1-2 person shops to high growth startups, to large corporates have benefited from Brennan’s ability to develop and manage high quality hands on training sessions. Brennan is inspiring, full of energy and great at bringing out the best in those around him.” ~ Ben Sand, co-founder of Meta

The goal of the Meta Pioneer Workshops was to teach experienced developers and, first-time users of Unity, help them build a working prototype in two days of their app they can take home and show their bosses, clients and companies, which they can continue to work with after the event to launch as a Native Meta App.

It was a two-day professional workshop series, where we saw attendance from some of the biggest companies in the world, and hundreds of developers.

In the Meta Pioneers Workshops I would take developers from the basics of the Meta SDK & hardware, through to advanced concepts of how the human eye perceives 3D & Depth, how to present an app and advanced SDK features.

“Brennan is energetic, intelligent and connects with people whether they are technical or not. His easy going manner and natural curiosity made our customers feel at ease when learning how to build apps on the Meta glasses.” ~ Todd Revolt, Director of Stratecig Alliences, Meta

Webinars

I have built a number of professional tutorials and online webinars making technical topics, simple. Webinars & tutorial videos are a cheap, scalable way of reaching large audiences.

Applying Math in Game Development

In 2012 I started a company teaching kids how to apply the math they learn at school in making computer games. With the goal of motivating them to use more math, and understand how it can be used in their lives.

I designed the course content as I took on new students, eventually having enough to range from students from 5 years of age to 17. Lessons where taught with the Game Makers Studio drag and drop interface, programming wasn’t strictly necessary to have kids build their own games, which allowed me to work with kids as young as 5.

Lessons were carried out one on one online, with plans to scale them into classrooms type environments.

My clients were all across Australia and even internationally. Being online, allowed both my cleints and I to be in the comfort of our own homes while make the games.

The goal of the Meta Pioneer Workshops was to teach experienced developers and, first-time users of Unity how to build Meta apps. Help them build a working prototype of their app in two days to be used in pitches to bosses, clients and partner companies. These prototypes, were also the beginning of their app, which they would continue to work with after the event to launch as a Native Meta App.

It was a two day professional workshop series, where we saw attendance from some of the biggest companies in the world, and hundreds of developers.

Unity Workshops at Noisebride SF

Noisebrige is a hackerspace in San Fransisco, and holds weekly Unity Workshops called GameBridge Unityversity . Gamebridge Unityversity is a weekly Unity game development meetup and beginner-friendly class for anyone who wants to learn programming, game design, art, music, and how to teach game dev. All skill levels and kinds of game devs are welcome.

For 6 months in 2015/2016 I would volunteer my time when I could to teach game development, object orientated programming, version control & Unity at Gamebrige.

Hack the future!

Hack The Future (Htf) is a self-directed hackathon for future hackers aged 10-19. Offering kids a free one-day learning extravaganza on hardware and software technologies.

I mentored at Htf 11 & Htf 14. Mentoring Game Development With Unity. Htf focuses on allowing kids to learn how to learn. Rather than have Teachers, it has Mentors. The Mentors are not there to direct the kids, show them how it is done or even answer questions. But rather point them in the right direction so they can find the answers themselves. We are there to help them ask the right questions.

Im still putting together the information about companies, business and startups I have started or helped grow. This will mostly be aimed at investors. Stay tuned!

Software Development

I have been involved in growing many communities, some I founded myself, others I joined in for the cause, and helped out as much as I could. Here are my favourites and what the people in them have to say about my contribution.

Devika

At Devika we built a strong community of enthusiastic, enjoyable, technically savvy people with a passion for making the world a better place.

The Devika community is build around our values and ideology.

The Devika Values:
1. Listen to Understand
2. Lead with Integrity
3. Be Yourself
4. Be Courageous
5. Support Each Other
6. Explore
7. Continuously Improve

Our ideology is our 4 P’s

People = Planet = Pushing Boundaries = Profit.

Empowering People
People are key to any organisation and community. And they must always feel valued and empowered.

Improving the Planet
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” ~ David R. Brower

Pushing boundaries
Whether it is progressing technology, pushing humanity to new and unknown places or simply improving ourselves it is important to keep moving forward, for the sake of the people and the planet.

Profit
We believe it is important to hold our core pillars along side of profit. To highlight that profit should never be more important than people, the planet or moving forward and to recognise that without making profit we could not be doing what we are.

Meta Pioneers

From 2013 – 2015, I took the Meta Kickstarter Community and grew it into a developer community, building & publishing apps.

“Developer events are better with Brennan.

Limitless energy, good spirits and a can do attitude make Brennan a fantastic facilitator for developer events. Hundreds of developers from across the USA and across the world, from 1-2 person shops to high growth startups, to large corporates have benefited from Brennan’s ability to develop and manage high quality hands on training sessions. Brennan is inspiring, full of energy and great at bringing out the best in those around him. I have no hesitation in recommending Brennan to initiate or bring renewed life to a program of developer engagement, hackathons or formal training sessions.”
~ Ben Sand, co-founder of Meta

Meta Company Culture

Brennan embodies passion of living life in bold and adventurous endeavors. His warmth, infectious smile, and Can Do attitude makes any one he meets feel immediately connected, at ease, and grounded in knowing encouragement and support is readily available. He easily welcomes the unknown, able to dive in and figure things out while in the process; this was consistently demonstrated with the Pioneers Team when delivering training sessions.

He is able to voice opinions and suggestions in a manner that is conducive to team spirit and consistently looks for ways to enhance team outcome. You will find his energy and output refreshing to any team that focuses on executing possibility, a necessary attribute within a start up company producing current disruptive technology. Natalie Huen Wellness Manager, Meta

What people have to say about me

“Brennan was one of Meta’s most charismatic, positive and energetic developer / evangelist in Meta’s 3 year history. It was a real pleasure to work shoulder to shoulder with him.

Brennan balanced a down to earth mentality with technical focus, and gave our developer community a feeling of comfort. Always coming to work with a smile, but also very direct– I enjoyed Brennan’s no bullshit, constructive feedback mentality.

Although I’m sure he is more versatile that I’ve been able to test but in my specific experience, any community leadership, developer evangelist or technical teacher positions would be particularly fitting.
I’ll always cherish the time we spent together, and warmly recommend him to any employer that he may cross paths with in the future.”

~ Meron Gribetz, Founder & CEO of Meta

“Brennan has been extremely helpful here at “Meta North” with various conferences, events, and also getting lots of people started with Meta here at University of Toronto and other nearby universities.

Brennan is a person of immense authenticity, integrity, and humility, and a great asset to Meta and to us, for the time that he was able to spend here.”
